Student cyclist killed near Brock University

Albert Piccioni, a Brock University student, was killed, Oct. 4. He was hit by a car while bicycling near the Brock campus;  the collision happened at around 9:00 p.m. on Merrittville Highway by Decrew Road.

Piccioni was 19-years-old and  a second year accounting student at Brock. He was originally from Campbellville.

Police told the St. Catharines Standard that Piccioni was not wearing a helmet and was hit when he made a hard turn. The car, a 2005 Saturn, turned into the northbound lane at the same time Piccioni was turning into the same lane. Piccioni was hit and flew from his bike.

After the collision, Piccioni was rushed to St. Catharines General Hospital. He was then pronounced dead. The driver, a 24-year-old Smithville man, was not hurt. 

Niagara regional police say that the crash is still under investigation and the name of the driver has not been released.
