East Gwillimbury bids for a university campus

East Gwillimbury, set further north than Markham, with a population of over 22,000,  has its eyes fixed upon getting a university campus, even if they don’t yet have a high school.

“We are going to be a very unique community; there will not be another like ours in the GTA,” said East Gwillimbury Mayor Virginia Hackson. “We have the amenities of all other communities, but we will also have a lot, almost 70 per cent, of green open space,” she said.

East Gwillimbury is seeking to bid on one of three campuses proposed by the provincial government as they attempt to create 60,000 more post-secondary spots by 2016.

The small municipality is not alone in their desire, the town of Milton has been talking with Wilfrid Laurier University since 2007 in an attempt to open up a satelite campus.
